This is not a story about the successes of a North Carolina entrepreneur, although his resume is impressive: Jim Goodnight, the founder a business analytics software and services company, sailed through the economic crash, making 2010 his most profitable year ever. He is currently dividing his work between Macy's and the endangered hippos in Africa.
The former statistics professor's top priority is to increase the number of scientists and mathematicians in the U.S. He wants to stem the flow of jobs and research to other parts of the world. His passion is to get American schools passionate about science, technology, engineering and math. He cites a recent survey indication that the shortage of mathematicians and scientists in this country caused 77 percent of global technology companies to open research centers in China and India, rather than the U.S. Another alarming trend is that only four out of 10 leading firms obtaining U.S. patents are headquartered here in the states. His firm's main philanthropic focus during the last 15 years has been improving America's educational system--one student and school at a time. He started in North Carolina by giving thousands of middle and high school students laptop computers while developing free online courses for 40,000 classrooms. Goodnight feels without improvements to the country's educational system, the U.S. will be suffer greatly and will fail to regain its former place of prominence in the world economy. Students and parents are also a big part of the problem, he thinks. Kids are no longer enthusiastic about learning subjects like math and science. They are not willing to put in the hard work it takes to master these disciplines. Parents must also accept a large part of the blame. Most are content letting their children play video games, watch TV and text each other, according to the SAS CEO. He not only fears for the future of American children, but also the country and his company. It is his desire to keep as many technology jobs in the U.S. as possible and he will continue his one man crusade to do so.
