While unemployment in South Carolina is mired around the 9 percent level, a disturbing trend is that unemployment among young people is much higher. With so many available jobs well suited for teens and college students, why is it that so many can not find suitable employment?
A South Carolina entrepreneur thinks he may have the answer. Chad Vail opened his first business while still in college. His hot pretzel business took off and he soon had multiple locations in the state. His business was perfect for kids and college students that wanted after school or part-time jobs. At least that is what Vail thought. Overall, he was correct. Like a lot of small fast-food based businesses, young people are ideal workers. It appeared there were certainly enough in that age group looking for work. Vail assumed he would have an endless supply of eager employees. He found quite the opposite to be true. What he discovered in his endless pool of applicants was that they not only had no work skills, they also had no idea of how to even interview for a job. He believes that over 80 percent of applicants for jobs at his company were simply unemployable elsewhere. After watching the constant parade of hapless job candidates, Vail decided to do something about the situation. He began volunteering in schools in an attempt to teach some vital skills to the students. He developed his own curriculum and, because he was quite young himself, managed to identify with the students. This led Vail to Junior Achievement Worldwide, the world's largest group dedicated to educating students about preparing to enter the workforce. This program brings in volunteers to help students learn to become productive workers, good citizens and informed consumers--in short, how they can achieve their dreams. This year Vail hopes to establish 500 Junior Achievement programs with 12,000 members. Chad Vail is an entrepreneur giving back to his community through lessons learned from building his own business.
