Does an entrepreneur have a special gene that other people simply don't possess? If the Smith family is the example of an entrepreneurial family, the answer is definitely yes.
When he was much younger, Bill Smith of Cooperstown, New York was one of those restless, inventive kids. He loved to make hot-air balloons and had a side interest in making noisy exploding things. He was always experimenting and tinkering around the house as well as at the local science club. His inventive nature paid off when he started a company, now called McLaren Performance Technologies, which builds engines and drive trains for the auto industry. In addition to inventing and forming successful companies, Smith was an avid skier. That entrepreneurial spirit even permeated his sporting obsession. While skiing in Europe, Smith invented a device that would help slow skiers as during their descent down the slopes. As the engine company grew he got busy and shelved his invention, the Ski-Klipper. Fast-forward a few decades. Smith's grandsons are now taking his idea up a notch with a product based on his original invention. Active California brothers that grew up skateboarding and skiing, Nick and Billy Smith also loved to tinker and create things just like their granddad. When they found some of their grandfather's Ski-Klippers in a box, the entrepreneurial gene really kicked in. They reworked the product and renamed it the Sporting-Sail. It has been tested and will not only reduce speed it will help athletes maintain control over their board or skis. Only 700 of the sails have been sold to date, mostly online, but the brothers are not in a hurry to mass market the product. They know they have time on their side. There are over 18 million skaters around the world and not one efficient braking system on the market. At least, not yet! The entrepreneurial gene does indeed exist - it is alive and well in the Smith family.
