The state of Missouri is well known. But did you know that Kansas City (Missouri) has more miles of boulevards than Paris and more fountains than any city except Rome? Or did you know the ice cream cone was invented at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904 when an ice cream vendor ran out of cups and asked a waffle vendor to help by rolling up waffles to hold ice cream?
Entrepreneurs and enterprising people have always made Missouri a vital and appealing place to live. Many Missourians have made significant contributions to the economy and prosperity of Missouri as well as to the United States. Following are a few famous entrepreneurs who helped put Missouri on the map. J. C. Penney, a household name, started his company in Missouri in 1902. Founded on The Golden Rule, Penney believed that his stores should be run with honesty and a deep respect for the customer. It is interesting to know that Sam Walton of WalMart began his career at J. C. Penney. Around the turn of the century Annie Turnbo Malone started her company in St. Louis making hair products for black women. She began by going door-to-door selling her own unique brand, "Poro", a West African name, which means physical and spiritual growth. By the 1920s, Annie Malone had become a multi-millionaire. Until the end of her life she continued to share her great wealth with those less fortunate than herself. Allen Percival Green (A. P. Green), through his investments in Missouri business, brought jobs and economic growth to the state. In 1910 Green bought a firebrick company in Mexico, Missouri for $80,000. Five years later, when the A. P. Green Fire Brick Company was incorporated, the value of the facility and equipment had risen to over $200,000. His refractory products contributed significantly to the largest period of industrial growth in United States history. They also played an essential role in the winning of two world wars and the massive rebuilding projects that took place afterward.
