Being the smallest fish in a large pond sometimes has its advantages. Rather than being known for shiny offices in a grand office park, a Texas entrepreneur based her software business in the idyllic community of Flower Mound, Texas. ATS Technical, a 4th-grade dream, is now reality and writing custom software for private and public sector clients.

Lisa Murdock, founder of ATS Technical, is a viable competitor of much larger technology consultancy companies. The president and CEO of her own information technology company, she works with clients from the Defense Department and Department of State to Fortune 500 companies.

Murdock's company writes and installs custom software. ATS Technical then trains employees on how to use the software. Utilizing experience with major software vendors such as Microsoft, Oracle and SAP, ATS Technical's small size give it a significant advantage. Murdock says ATS is much more flexible and cost-efficient than some of the large software vendors.

Setting ATS apart from competitors are designations as a Small Business Administration certified company and Texas HUB (Historically Underutilized Business). The Texas HUB designation, indicating a minority/woman-owned firm, is useful when bidding on government contracts and RFP's.

"We don't have a lot of overhead. We don't keep a staff of employees," says Murdock. "If we did that, and maintained a number of employees, we would have to pass that cost along to our customers. So we try to develop our bench after we are awarded a contract. Then we grow as the project evolves."

"Our certifications differentiate us, and that is unique because we can work with the U.S. government. The certifications we have are recognized by Fortune 500 companies as well. Yet, we work with small to medium sized business too. So we have that cross-functional expertise," Murdock said.

ATS Technologies has the capability to react with immediacy and a sense of urgency. In an information driven world they have shown just how important their services are. From selling Girl Scout cookies and delivering newspapers as a kid, Murdock's is a classic small business success story.
