Imagine a state with a tremendous appreciation for beer and a serious lack of brewmeisters to quench that thirst.

Ironically, North Dakota leads the country in malt barley production, however the brew consumed in the state comes from breweries in other states. The single business in North Dakota with a license to brew is a Minnesota-based company.

The obvious question would be why are there no breweries in North Dakota? It's hard to believe, but the root of the problem is big government.

The simple fact is North Dakota's breweries are governed by a series of laws like labeling, health and alcohol. If a brewer can navigate these laws, they are then confronted with distribution laws that prohibit breweries from distributing their own product.

Brewers must pay distributors which cut their profits by half. That's the main reason there are no breweries in the state.

One brave brewer opened a brew pub in Dickinson during the 1990s. Sadly it closed because of the archaic state laws.

A Bismarck web developer who worked for the failed Dickinson brew pub, is considering testing the waters again. He is hopeful he can make a go of this venture.

It is a competitive market that is especially difficult to break into in North Dakota. The state's laws make it even more difficult than it needs to be. The state seems to be intent on throwing up unnecessary roadblocks for small businesses.

In a state so in love with beer, it just doesn't make any sense to deny brewers the opportunity to create local jobs, contribute to state's revenue and become successful in an industry that seems to be a sure bet.

North Dakota residents would surely flock to a homegrown brewer instead of relying on brewers from neighboring states. It makes too much sense.

Just another example of government at work for you.
