Entrepreneur and Home Office ResourcesNoteworthy Entrepreneur From Florida
Florida boasts many areas and homes of the rich and famous. Gigantic mansions line the coast, golf courses and waterways of Florida. However, few of these mega-wealthy types were native Floridians. Most made their fortunes elsewhere and came to Florida to retire or build second homes.
However, Florida does have some home grown entrepreneurs and business people. One such person is both a self-made success and is in fact "famous". Born in Tallahassee, this businessman made a fortune by selling a simple but delicious cookie recipe created by his Aunt Della. His love for food, in particular his Aunt's homemade chocolate and pecan cookies, led Wallace Amos to study the culinary arts at Food Trades Vocation High School for two years. After finishing the culinary program, he did not immediately become a famous cookie entrepreneur. He first joined the Air Force. After his service, he took an odd route to entrepreneurship by working for a major talent agency on the west coast--the William Morris Agency. He used his culinary skills, baking cookies, to entice celebrities to sign with his agency. He would send a fresh batch of home-baked cookies to the celebrity with a note asking to meet with them. The first African American talent scout, Amos was responsible for the discovery of the singing duo Simon and Garfunkel. After deciding the Los Angeles music scene was not for him, Amos began to experiment with modifying his Aunt's cookie recipes with the idea of opening his own cookie store. His dream came true in 1975 when he opened his first Famous Amos cookie store on Sunset Boulevard in L.A. The first year he had sales of $300,000 followed the second year by sales over $1 million. Over the years the Famous Amos Cookie Company has experienced its share of ups and downs. Finally in 1998, the Keebler Company purchased his company and brought Wally Amos on as the company's official spokesman. Quite an achievement for the cookie man from Tallahassee.
