Life science research has made Gary Crocker a very wealthy man. You might immediately assume Crocker is a scientist or doctor who developed and patented a life-saving product. Crocker is neither. He is, however, a Harvard MBA with a strong interest in medical devices and the life sciences.
Throughout his career, Crocker has never focused on just the money. Rather, he is interested in areas of medicine that have needs and will help with quality of life issues. He has a keen nose for meeting the challenges of medicine as well as a bold entrepreneurial spirit. While finishing his MBA at Harvard, Crocker worked for a company in the Boston area selling medical devices. He wandered the halls of every hospital demonstrating the devices and always kept his eyes open for possible innovations or improvements. Instead of accepting a management position, he returned to Utah to work with his father-in-law. Possessed with an entrepreneurial bent, he helped negotiate and sell his father-in-law's business to Abbot. Abbot recognized Crocker's value to the company and kept him on as VP of marketing and product development. He soon moved on from Abbot with an engineer and manufacturing vice president to take over a company that made open-heart catheters. During this time, he also co-founded TheraTech, a company that developed a delivery system for hormones through wearable patches. Over the next few years, Crocker managed both companies and was instrumental in moving each company ahead in their respective area of science. In the late 1990's, he sold both companies and founded Crocker Ventures, a venture capital company that focuses on very early development medical research. He looks at companies with ideas that many venture capitalists would not consider. Other venture capital firms want a quick turnaround, but not Crocker-he's in it for the long term. Crocker continues to focus on life science endeavors as well as his devotion to Utah Youth Village. Utah Youth Village is a second chance for kids who have made serious mistakes and Crocker is proud to help make a difference in their lives.
