The Financial Literacy Grant Program was established in 2006 by JP MorganChase as part of its commitment to assist consumers with financial education and planning. From a donation of $1.3 million dollars per year, the funds go to over 30 organizations across the country that include credit counseling, consumer research and industry trade associations.
Inside a large white tent set up in the middle of Rodney Square in downtown Wilmington, Delaware, 60 future entrepreneurs participated in Market Day, the final day of Chasing the Dream entrepreneur summer camp. Budding entrepreneurs take note: if you are between the age of 8 and 14, the Delaware Financial Literacy Institute has a summer program designed just for you. Camp director and senior associate director of the Delaware Institute, Karen Graham, said the camp teaches children what it is like to be an entrepreneur. "Not only are we teaching kids options for their life, we're teaching them to think and be creative," she said. Established by Gov. Jack Markell when he was state treasurer, the institute provides over 600 financial education classes each year. At the summer camp, prominent business owners give talks on a wide range of business and financial topics. Campers learn business finance, marketing, customer service and product development. The speakers constantly reinforce customer service to the young entrepreneurs telling them that no matter what, the customer is always right. During the weeklong camp, students begin Monday by working on their product and business plan. Thursday they sell their products at Market Day. Graduation is Friday. Campers are told an entrepreneur is someone who looks for opportunities, takes some risks and is energetic and patient. During the camp, the young entrepreneurs pay for their supplies from their profits. Some campers make as much as $60 profit from the sale of their products and services. The week long camp costs $100 which covers food and a T-shirt. For those that qualify, need-based scholarships of $75 are available.
